Abridge

bridge
Turning scientific publications and policy papers into lively and engaging 3 min video trailers
TOO MUCH INFORMATION, TOO LITTLE TIME
With an ever growing and non-stop flow of publications, most of us can barely keep up to date with knowledge in our field.
KNOWLEDGE IS GETTING LOST
Too many publications do not reach their audience, and some of them are
not even read
VIDEO IS WHERE OUR ATTENTION IS TODAY

between those who produce knowledge and those who should be using it in various different fields: health, education, management, psychology, biology, nutrition, agriculture, economics, etc...
our mission is to bridge the gap
BUILDING A BRIDGE
Building a bridge requires a solid foundation
Our solution is based on what we know from neuroscience on learning in the 21st century. Knowledge processing and retention improve when several cognitive paths are activated at the same time. Videos provide the comfort, accessibility and effectiveness to deliver deep knowledge in record time.
Each trailer is built on a consistent structure that promotes engagement, learning and retention:
DELIVERY
A systematic focus on the main points of the publication

USER EXPERIENCE
Audio, visuals, animations that support processing and retention in record time

HUMAN FACTOR
Interview of the authors or peers to give real life context to specific knowledge

IMPACT
A focus on the impact of the publication on bigger agendas

WHO is Abridge for?
Those who produce knowledge and those who use it
PRACTITIONERS that need to remain up to date in their field
Online universities to include in their MOOCs
JOURNALISTS to gain awareness of certain work to use in their stories.
RESEARCHERS to gain a principal understanding of the work before reading the full version
The new generation of MICROLEARNERS who take advantage of small breaks to keep learning
University PROFESSORS to help make their courses more lively and effective

meet the team
Our team of complementary individuals combines over 50 years of professional experience in a variety of fields: cell biology and virology, social sciences, education policy, international development, as well as film production and graphic design. Together, we reached the conclusion that humanity would be better served if the knowledge we produced collectively, was more frequently used and applied where it was intended to be. This meant we needed a solution to make updates in knowledge much more accessible to anyone, anytime (including ourselves!). After countless sleepless nights of discussion, we had a vision for a solution and joined forces with a mission to close the knowledge gap.
Julien Hautier
Julien is an international education specialist, who has spent the past 18 years working for international organizations in different countries including the USA, Ecuador, Haiti, Tunisia, and other countries mainly in Latin America and Africa. Most recently he was Chief of Education for UNICEF but also worked for the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and other development agencies. He is a kitesurfing addict and has 2 pieces of crunchy monsters (4 and 6)
VANESSA TAUPIN, pHD
French native, Vanessa is a research scientist with more than 15 years of experience publishing in the fields of cell biology, microbiology, gene therapy, HIV, cancer and neuroscience. She has worked in France, Scotland, in the USA at Children's Hospital LA and at UC San Diego. Her passion for communication combined with her artistic side made her a microscopist expert and a (graphic) design addict. Whether it's an electron microscope when in a lab - or a camera when she travels the world backpacking, she feels alive when looking through a lens. She loves teaching, especially messy science experiments to her two "amours" of boys (4 and 6); and exploring California in her 1996 vintage van.
Brett Hilton
Brett started his career as a cell biologist developing assays to aid in drug discovery, specifically against HIV. Several years, publications and patents later, he successfully helped to build and operate a new facility at San Diego State University that catered to the scientific needs of the entire community. Eager to learn more about the world, he then decided to explore all (well ok… some) that the world has to offer. After spending a year and a half learning in South America, Europe, India/Nepal, Southeast Asia and Australia, he returned obsessed with film production and the life of an entrepreneur. A radical change indeed. He tries to stay grounded and focused by stomping around California’s Sierra Nevada’s with his life partner (on the left) and their two (very) energetic boys.
